History

Oradour-sur-Glane: the martyr village and Memorial Centre.
A visit to Oradour will leave you silenced for hours and days. The village is as it is, following the massacre of the village population by the 200 Waffen SS, on 10 June 1944.

Visitors can learn about this terrible, historical event in the Memorial Centre.
It is haunting and very emotional to see, but one of those necessary visits to ensure man can never see a repeat. The men were cruelly separated from the women and children and were simultaneously executed in various places close to the town.

The women and children were hurdled like cattle into the church and were massacred by gas, grenades and other explosives before being machine-gunned.

The church was then set alight, the village pillaged and burnt and, in a few hours, reduced to ruins. The site bears witness to Nazi atrocities and the necessity to remember as homage to the 642 victims of this abject crime.

There was one sole survivor that managed to escape and tell the story. Locals could see the burning for miles and the smell in the air remained for months. It has been said that when you visit Oradour, even the birds don’t sing. Testament to the suffering that was incurred to innocent citizens.
